Happy Birthday to the Dalai Lama!

His Holiness the Dalai Lama was born in Amdo province of Tibet on July 6, 1935. Today is his 77th birthday, and it is being celebrated by Buddhists and supporters of Tibet around the world. His Holiness ranks among the important people of our time, holding his own among such luminaries as Mother Theresa, Ghandi and Thích Nhất Hạnh.

During his long lifetime, the Dalai Lama (which means Ocean of Wisdom) has spent much of his energies on bringing about the freedom of the Tibetan people from Chinese control. He desires autonomy for his people, along with the freedom to practice their religion and continue to cherish their traditions.
